Help provide rural Ugandans with safe drinking water
Help Ugandan communities purify their water and improve overall health and sanitation.
Number of products requested:
54 Solvatten Solar Safe Water System
Total funds required to implement proposal:
$7,687
Problem to be addressed:
Lack of access to safe drinking water and inadequate sanitation and hygiene: The main cause of death each year in Jinja District, Uganda, is unsafe drinking water and poor sanitation amongst local communities. Families use expensive fuel stoves to boil water for drinking and hygiene purposes. These stoves can cause household fires or lung disease in individual family members. Deforestation is also a growing concern in the district due to the widespread use of wood for energy.
How will these technologies address this problem?
The Solvatten solar safe water system will reduce deaths caused by water-borne diseases and improve hygiene and sanitation practices by providing communities with potable water and warm water for washing. The Solvatten system will also reduce the use of fuel stoves to purify water, helping to prevent the occurrence of fires and resultant health conditions. The technology will be loaned out to rural families at a small cost. 270 people will benefit from this initiative.
